The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) has closed the Bonny Doon Ecological Reserve for 90 days to study the impacts of the Martin fire.

DFG scientists and CalFire staff will assess the impacts of last week's fire on listed plant species and habitat and ensure that debris from the fire pose no risk to public safety.

The fire burned an estimated 80 percent of the 552-acre reserve in Santa Cruz County. Approximately two-thirds of the reserve is usually open to the public.

During the study and debris removal period access to the reserve will be limited only to people working the area.

The Bonny Doon Ecological Reserve, most of which was acquired by DFG in 1989, contains three state and federal listed plant species - the Santa Cruz cypress, the Santa Cruz wallflower and the Ben Lomond spineflower. It is one of only three sites where Santa Cruz cypress is found in the world.
