The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) will take top winners of the 2008 Nature Bowl competition to the American River to assist stocking trout. The event is scheduled for June 10.
“The Nature Bowl competition is an annual spring event, which is one of only seven similar events in California,” said Bruce Forman, Interpretive Services Supervisor and coordinator of the Nature Bowl. “The competition helps children learn more about their environment and encourages their involvement in conservation efforts in their communities. DFG sponsors the trout plant for the winners of this competition as a reward for a job well done.”
Participants in the fish plant will meet at 8 a.m. at the American River Hatchery located at 2101 Nimbus Road in Rancho Cordova, Calif., where DFG will load trout into a truck for transport. Nature Bowl winners, along with DFG staff, will then caravan to Fork Campground on Silver Fork Road along the American River near Kyburz. At 10 a.m., students will assist DFG in stocking trout into the American River. The stocking concludes at 11:30 a.m.
The Nature Bowl, a program in its 23rd year, is a regional cooperative team competition focusing on activities and questions regarding environmental science and natural resource conservation topics that correlate to California Education Standards for Science. The teams competed in third/fourth grade and fifth/sixth grade divisions.
Sponsors of the Nature Bowl competition are the American River Natural History Association, American River Conservancy, DFG, Effie Yeaw Nature Center of Sacramento County Parks, Placer Nature Center, Yolo Basin Foundation and California State University, Sacramento Schools and Colleges for the Advancement of Teaching Science Program.
