California hunters may now access their Big Game Drawing preference point information 24 hours a day by visiting the Department of Fish and Game’s (DFG) Web site at http://biggame.dfg.ca.gov/bgpoints/.

DFG implemented a Modified Preference Point System (MPPS) in 2002 to reward applicants who apply consistently but unsuccessfully for big game tags, while still providing opportunity for premium tags to new or returning hunters. Under a MPPS drawing, tag quotas for deer, elk, pronghorn antelope and Bighorn sheep hunts are split into two parts - one is awarded to applicants with the highest preference points, while the other is awarded through random drawings.

Hunters who are not drawn for their first-choice tag may earn one preference point per year, per species. Hunters will lose all accumulated preference points for a species when awarded their first choice tag for that species.

Detailed information on the Big Game Hunting Program and preference points are available on the DFG web site at www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/biggame/biggamehunting.html.
