DFG Offers Special Youth Pheasant Hunts at Grizzly Island Wildlife Area

Permits will be issued for a special youth pheasant hunt event at the Department of Fish and Game’s (DFG) Grizzly Island Wildlife Area, southwest of Fairfield in Solano County. DFG’s Youth Game Bird Heritage Program will sponsor the special hunt.

The hunt permits will be offered to junior hunters on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Oct. 1, 2004 for four special pheasant hunts. To be eligible, youths must have successfully completed a hunter education course and possess a valid 2004-05 California Junior Hunting License at the time of application. The hunts are scheduled as follows:

  • Hunt No. 1 – Nov. 20, from 8 a.m. to noon
  • Hunt No. 2 – Nov. 20, from 1 p.m. to 4:56 p.m.
  • Hunt No. 3 – Nov. 21, from 8 a.m. to noon
  • Hunt No. 4 – Nov. 21, from 1 p.m. to 4:55 p.m.

Junior hunters interested in a permit must apply in writing with the following information: Name, mailing address, telephone number, 2004-05 Junior Hunting License number, name of adult chaperone, and a first and second choice hunt number. If the first choice has been filled, applicants will be assigned to the second choice hunt if it has not yet been filled. A minimum of one non-hunting adult, 18 years of age or older, is required to accompany and supervise every two junior hunters. Up to four junior hunters may apply as a group if complete information for each hunter is included.

Applications will be accepted until the hunt periods have been filled. A total of 160 permits will be available for the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area junior pheasant hunts. Each of the hunt periods will be limited to 40 youths. All successful applicants will be notified by mail. Each junior hunter will be limited to the taking of two rooster pheasants.
