Outdoor California Magazine's latest issue turns up the heat as it revisits the sites of the severe October 2003 Southern California fires.
Wildlife will find a way to survive, and many of the habitats have strong signs that recovery is well underway. For some species like Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep, the fires provided a boon as they cleared old habitat and opened the opportunity for revitalization through new growth. For others, like two species of delicate butterflies, the fires consumed whole populations, but hope still remains as the habitat rebounds and surviving populations begin to expand.
Follow the efforts of agencies who work together to stop the fire and protect the habitat of endangered species. Together, they accomplish both.
