Why the Initiative? | MLPA Summary | Memorandum of Understanding (Adobe Reader required)
The north central coast study region (Alder Creek near Point Arena in Mendocino County, to Pigeon Point in San Mateo County, including the Farallon Islands) was the second of the five MLPA study regions to undergo the regional marine protected area (MPA) planning and design process. Four alternative MPA proposals were forwarded in June 2008 to the California Fish and Game Commission, one of which was recommended as the preferred alternative (referred to as the Integrated Preferred Alternative). There are still opportunties for public comment on MPA proposals in the north central coast study region before the commission makes its final decision (expected in February 2009). MPA proposals under consideration by the Commission are available on the Commission Web site.
For a schedule of commission meetings where public comment will be taken on the north central coast MPA proposals, visit the California Fish and Game Commission regulatory information and select the marine protected areas link, and confirm that a public hearing is still being held on those dates by checking the commission’s meeting agenda (posted ten days before the meeting at www.fgc.ca.gov).
