Resources OverviewMountain Whitefish (native)
Prosopium williamsoni
The mountain whitefish is a widespread member of the salmonid family found in much of western North America. In California they are native to the eastern Sierra drainages of the Lahontan basin. At times, large numbers of whitefish can be found in the East Walker and Truckee Rivers. Anglers have generally "underappreciated" these gamefish, favoring the beauty of trout. Whitefish can offer great sport and whitefish in excess of two pounds are present in our eastern Sierra rivers. Although they are more "bony" than trout, whitefish fans know that they are excellent when smoked. The bag limit for whitefish is currently fifteen.
