Image of DFG worker holding recently tagged fish.In order to better manage California's valuable fisheries resources, information on abundance, growth rates, age, migrations, strain identification, and stocking success is needed.

One of the ways biologists collect this data is by attaching tags to various species of planted and wild fish. Tagging can be done at a hatchery prior to planting in a California water or on location during a "catch and release" activity.
